DVD Studio pro re-install

I have a laptop from 2009 that I only use for DVD Studio Pro. But after a year of not creating a DVD, now the program crashes at the last operation, "build." I thought maybe I had updated the software one too many times and is now incompatible with DVD SP. The OS is 10.9.5, and the software is 4.2.2, the final version Apple made.

I either buy new software from another developer to author my DVDS, or I try to downgrade my OS. I found a store that will downgrade to 10.8.5, but this requires that I wipe the hard drive completely.

I don't have the Final Cut Studio disks anymore, so i can't re-isntall from those.

My question then, is, can I copy the application DVD Studio Pro from the applications folder to an external hard drive, wipe the computer and install the older version of the OS, then simply drag and drop from the external drive back onto the newly wiped internal hard drive? Will that install this program properly? Or are there necessary hidden files that will be erased when the wipe happens?

Just a few thoughts .

First off , I believe there are many files associated with DVD SP apart from the application itself , so just copying the application I am pretty sure would not work.

Before considering other routes you would need the serial number that you were given with the discs that you no longer have, as I am pretty sure you will have to enter this what ever route you take.

If you have FCP ( from the Final Cut Studio discs ) installed then the serial number is displayed on the " splash " screen when FCP is launched. If you can get the serial number by doing this then OK . I do not believe the serial number is displayed when any of the other FCS apps are launched , but I could be wrong. If you cannot get the serial number then I think you are stumped. You only need the one serial number for all the FCS apps .

If you have the serial number then you could install a previous OS on an external drive? This would mean that you do not have to erase your existing hard drive . You could then boot up on the external with a previous OS and navigate to DVD SP on your internal HD and hopefully launch DVD SP. I am pretty sure It will be at this point that you will need the serial number.

Did your Mac from 2009 come with Snow Leopard?, If so then you could install this on an external drive IF you still have the install discs that came with the MAC.

You would then need to update to 10.6.8 https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399?locale=en_GB

and THEN update the App Store https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1860?locale=en_US

If not then do you see any other OS prior to 10.9.5 ( Lion 10.7 or Mountain Lion 10.8 ) listed in your Purchased page in the App Store .

I am not sure if Lion or Mountain lion would appear on your Purchased list , even if you had them before.
