Daisy chain older Thunderbolt2 displays to my new MacbookPro not working

I'm trying to daisy chain 2 older Thunderbolt2 displays (A1407) to my new MacbookPro (thunderbolt3) with the Apple branded adaptor and it isn't working. I can connect one at a time fine, but if I daisy chain, one monitor is blank, the other distorted. If I reverse the order of the monitors the effect reverses, the one that was distorted is now blank, etc.

I'd connect each monitor directly (with a 2nd adapter), but then I'm left with zero ports to power the laptop.

I've updated the OS to the latest. Not sure what else to do but it seems from other board posts this configuration should be possible.

That would be a big bummer considering my old macbook pro worked just fine in that configuration. :-(

Do you think a docking station would help? I was just looking at that possibility. https://www.apple.com/shop/product/HMX12ZM/A/caldigit-ts3-plus-dock?afid=p238%7Cs1JHZjKSn-dc_mtid_1870765e38482_pcrid_500452390989_pgrid_85992530854_&cid=aos-us-kwgo-pla-btb-catchall--slid---product-HMX12ZM/A
