iPhone appears in finder but with no details or sync options

Hello,

I'm trying to sync my iPhone Xr with the Music on my Mac. Both have the most recent OS. The iPhone appears in finder (and is trusted) and in the sidebar in the Music App. When I select it in the Music app on the Mac it hangs on "loading..." with "Sync Settings" blanked out. When I select it as a location in the sidebar in the finder window I don't get any details or options showing, just the name of the device (e.g. no model, storage or battery info, no tab headers like "General" or "Music" such as there is in the screenshot in this query: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT210611). Any ideas on how I can the mac to actually show the details of the phone and enable me to sync my music to the phone?

Many thanks

iMac 27″ 5K, macOS 11.3
