MacBook Pro not supporting my ultra wide

Hello reader,

I have a ultrawide Liyama monitor with a resolution of 3440 x 1440p. I connected my 2020 MacBook Pro with a USB C hub that supports 4k with a HDMI 2.0 cable. However, I still get black bars on the side edges of my screen.

What I did so far:

In display settings I put in the following in the image below.
Update to the latest OS
Putting my monitor settings on: Aspect Ratio or Full screen. Aspect ratio gives me the black bars and Full screen just stretches the screen.

In display settings I can put the display on 3840 x 2160, but it still gives black bars.

I hope that anyone can help.

Thanks for posting your question about your ultra-wide monitor in Apple Support Communities! A great place to start is by checking out the steps the article: Use external monitors with your Mac, as it outlines steps on how to setup an external monitor with your Mac. From the screenshot you have shown it appears as you have the resolution selected as "scaled." Do you still have the same issue when you select the "Best for PL3493WQ" option? Best wishes.

Hey NSL_MJD,

You can also try disconnecting the hub and resetting the SMC on the Mac to see if it resolves the issue. Follow the steps in the article: How to reset the SMC of your Mac.

Hi NSL_MJD,

Have you tried putting the display into full screen mode and changing the scale on the Mac in order to try to fit it within the screen size?

Hi Moon,

Thank you so much for answering. I read the article and did not find anything useful. Ive tried both scaled and best for PL3493WQ option. Both show black bars on the side.

With my MacBook Pro 2015, I use the same settings and with that MacBook it works. However with that MacBook I use a 4k display port to HDMI adapter.

So I currently don't know if my USB C hub for the 2020 MacBook is just not working, if I need to change my Macbook settings or something else.

Do you have any other ideas?
