AirTag will notify thieves they are hidden on the stolen object thanks to the unstucking feature

Recently my friend bought an AirTag, and put it hidden in their bike. So if someone stole it without knowing it was there, a notification will appear to say that there is an AirTag that “following him”, right? It told him and he wouldn’t believe me. Unless I’m missing something, what good are AirTags if they notify the thieves they are hidden on the stolen object?

The purpose of AirTags is so you can find an object you have misplaced. They are not designed or intended to track stolen items.

There is no good solution for tracking stolen items, and it may even be a bad idea to do so, because people have been murdered confronting thieves. Having insurance is a much better solution for dealing with theft.

Given that, however, Tiles are better than AirTags for items that might be stolen, for exactly the reason you hit upon.

This is really unfortunate, since I already know a lot of people that want to buy an AirTag for their dog or cycle, and there are already two products of collars with a hidden AirTag pocket. I think Apple need to publish a warning about it, although I don’t think they will because I already contact them about the idea of inheriting to my dogs collar and they were aboard with that. Profit reason, I suppose, but it is dangerous to people that unaware of that
