Is it possible to create a password protected folder?

Hi,

I have a few things on my computer (taxes, health records, ect) that I want in a password protected folder. Is this possible? The only way I know how to do it is by using something like Toast and then to create a password protected DVD... which are going out of style.

Can this be done on an older OS (High Sierra)??

Mac Pro, macOS 10.13

Yes, HOW TO CREATE ENCRYPTED DISK IMAGES WITH DISK UTILITY TO PROTECT PRIVATE DATA provides instructions. I recommend that for maximum protection, you do not use the “Remember password in my keychain” option.

Encrypting the Folder:

Using a Mac to perform this, you would create a password-protected folder, by encrypting it. Whenever someone attempts to open the file, they will be prompted to enter a password. You can burn this to a DVD, if desired.

How to Do So:

  1. Select: all applicable items
  2. Right-Click: on one item
  3. Select: Compress "[folder name]"

Password Protect a File:

Not necessarily. Yes, you can protect a file itself - but particular file-types only.
