Sync Session Failed to Finish (May 2021 Edition)

Hello again, the good old "sync session failed to finish" (SF2F) issue is back in town.

There are many temporary solutions discussed in this forum, but eventually the error comes back after some time. Here is what happens:

When the iPhone is connected with an USB cable to a Mac, it begins the wired sync procedure in finder.

The last sync step "Backing Up" seems to take somewhat longer than expected.

After that, the "Backing Up" process restarts again and immediately terminates with well-known the error message:

"The iPhone (name) could not be synced because the sync session failed to finish".

There is no event log nor a meaningful error message that could be used to track the underlying root cause of this recurring issue.

With the USB cable still connected, pressing the (Sync) button in Finder syncs again, with no error message.

After disconnecting and re-connecting the iPhone with the cable, the error is back. Syncing without the cable (over the air) seems to work only temporarily after the Mac was rebooted.

After some working hours, wireless sync is then no longer possible (Finder gets stuck with "Waiting for sync to start" and then terminates with the error "sync session failed to start.")

This issue has been around basically since the early days of Big Sur and it would be highly appreciated if sb. would come up with a sustainable solution.

Temporary solutions are: rebooting the Mac and the iPhone, turning iCloud Photos on/off, restoring the phone from a previous backup etc.

These solutions consume a lot of time, keep users busy, and may all work for a certain time. But eventually the error comes back after a couple of days.

Anyone from Apple reading this and considering a bugfix to relieve users from this nuisance would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Dear Amanda,

Thank You for picking this topic up. This time (after many trials and errors) I managed to resolve the SSF2F error by just deleting all my device backups (Manage Backups -> Delete Backup) and creating a new backup for each device (with the cable).

Another time before that, I had to use the Image Capture App and use the 3-dot (...) menu to switch the default app that auto-starts when a device is syncing with the cable.

Another time, I had to disable and re-enable iCloud Photos to resolve the issue.

Another time, I had to reboot all devices, go to Safe Mode (as You already mentioned), reboot again and the error was suddenly gone.

Now the SSF2F error is gone - until it will come back in one of the upcoming iOS and/or MacOS updates.

This is really frustrating as the Apple Hotline could previously never help in any of these cases.

The second error still persists:

After a clean MacOS reboot, wireless syncing works on all iDevices but after a certain amount of time, the Mac becomes unable to call out to any of the iDevices, so the wireless sync process is unable to start. And YES, restarting MacOS helps resolving this error, for a few hours only.

Little update: I frequently use my iPhone's 4G instead of ADSL because downloading is faster (just did 11.6) compared to my 1-2Mb/sec ADSL speed.

Well: synch ALWAYS fails when 4G is active and sometimes when it has been active just before. So now I consciously switch 4G on/off BEFORE connecting my iPhone using the USB cable. Didn't have any synch failure for the last 2 weeks.

Got this one too, tried everything I could find in the web

  • have latests versions of iOS Mac OS ...
  • cable is OK because Backup iPhone works, connect to internet via USB over 4G on iPhone works, via Wifi over 4G also works
  • I used the remote app on my iPhone to control my music library on MacBook, works fine
  • not subscribed to Apple Music, I have a large collection of CDs and vinyls
  • rebooted both sides

  • the sync icon appears briefly on my iPhone but nothing syncs
  • clicking sync in Finder => the sync session failed to start (which is somewhat different from finish)

Then I un-checked and re-checked the "sync music to iPhone" button in the Finder, followed by Apply.

????? upon a physical reconnect of my iPhone synching started and copied my whole library, which took a while. ????

To me this smells like a bug in the sync software

Hi Eprom1,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

We are happy to help with the issue you are having with syncing your iPhone. Have you tried syncing your device with a different cable? Is the cable you are using an Apple cable? Does the same thing happen with a second device?

Try out any of the troubleshooting steps that you haven't already completed here: If you see an error in Finder or iTunes on your computer.

You might want to create a new user and test that way as well. Check out Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac for steps. Does the issue occur in a new user?

Also, test to see if the issue persists in safe mode. This resource tells you how to start in safe mode and has some additional steps you can try depending on what the results are: How to use safe mode on your Mac.

Cheers!

@AppleThree: it has nothing to do with music syncing. The "Sync Session failed to finish" issue happens in the last step when the photos library is accessed.

Yet another, even more annoying issue is that sync over Wi-Fi randomly crashes macOS Finder on Mac mini. Reason is that the Mac min does not wait for the sync to complete and tries to go to standby, which then causes an endless sync-loop.

In consequence, when the Mac mini wakes up the next time, it does not go to sleep anymore. Finder is locked in this sync loop and cannot even be terminated. Rebooting macOS can resolve the issue, but this is difficult because Finder does not "let go" any more as it claims to be still in the middle of a syncing process.

It is a miracle to me how the Apple internal software QA is still missing those issues over the years. The issues are so easily reproducible when using the devices for a couple of days in a WLAN environment, where mobile devices are roaming and NOT staying in the network the entire day. I remember the old days when we had Catalina and less severe bugs in macOS Finder.

Hi Eprom1,

Thank you for your follow up! We understand the issue is intermittent. What happens when you test in a new user? What happens if you use a second Apple cable? Can you confirm which software version of MacOS you are currently on?

You mentioned that you had to switch the default app that auto-starts. Which app was that? Can you remove the app and test?

When you tested in safe mode, did the issue re-occur while in safe mode?

Good day!

We can reproduce the issue on 6 independent iDevices (iPads / iPhones) syncing with two independent Macs, all with the latest OS installed. This is a mass-problem. The internet is full of reports about this error and if it were not an OS bug, there would be a sustainable solution in public already. One reason is for sure that some services do not properly re-initialize after waking from standby. A reboot will be the solution to almost anything - for some time. For that wisdom I don't need another two hour discussion with the L1-Support. Will be happy to talk to the C-Level to discuss potential root causes if sb. reveals their number.

I emailed Craig about this on a whim, and ended up connected to Apple Executive Support. I did screen sharing and logging with an advisor, and went back and forth capturing the issue in real time and sending diagnostics to them.

Eventually, one of the exec support people called and said the engineers had found the issue and that it would be resolved "in the next software update." She was super ambiguous about what that meant -- next iOS? Next macOS? Did she mean a point release like 11.6, or Monterey?

It certainly isn't fixed yet, so my suspicion is that she meant Monterey since it appears to be a macOS bug, not an iOS bug.

Anyway, just wanted to share some faint glimmer of hope. I honestly doubt this is ever gonna be resolved -- Apple has clearly abandoned music-syncing users in favor of iCloud Music Library and/or Apple Music streaming, but maybe there's some small chance that an engineer or two within Apple actually does care about issues like this, cuz being an Apple customer that syncs music to their device is a miserable experience these days; this bug is just one of many that makes having a personal music library suck.

Dear Sharon, thanks for Your reply.

I can assure You that the SSF2F issue is not intermittent and that my cables are good.

It happens after a larger MacOS or iOS release is rolled out. We should not waste more time in trial and error testing, as the only people who will be able prevent recurrence are the programmers.

If You look out for "Sync Session Failed to Finish" on the web, You will find plenty of cases and as many solutions to try out, when you have the time.

It would help to find a meaningful error log on MacOS that could be saved as the error reoccurs to proceed with something that could help them fix the issue.

Fyi, the "Image Capture" App which is built in MacOS is capable of setting the parameter for "the" app that auto-starts when an iDevice is connected to the Mac with a cable. In most cases, the setting is "none" (no app starts). You can set this to "Photos" but the setting may become corrupted silently, causing additional sync errors.
