Why is 'tile window' not working on my Mac?

The old question is locked, but there were lots of 'this affects me' responses, so here's a new one with the solution.

The tile window feature might not be working if you have an external display attached. Go to:

System Preferences > Mission Control > tick 'Displays have separate Spaces'

You'll no longer be able to have a window span across displays, but the tile window feature should work (after you log out/in again).

When switching between apps open windows are sliding off screen - it just started happening - very irritating MacOS Mojave - macbook pro application windows are sliding off screen when i choose to view another application - the recommended solutions are not working such as system preferences/mission control turning off displays have separate spaces.
