I have an Apple iMac M1 on order. I would like to continue to use a Brother HL-2040 laser printer with the new iMac over a USB cable connection. Does anyone know if Brother has macOS 11.3 M1 compatible drivers available. I am search myself but no good information yet.
If I have to, I'll buy a Brother or HP AirPrint laser printer if they will work with an M1 iMac.
Only Brother can answer your question reliably at this point. I would check with them. History shows that many printer manufacturers are often slow to release updated printer drivers, but one may be on the way. So what I would research is whether any given printer has inbuilt firmware that is compatible with Air Print and the M1 Macs. You might be wise to waite six months or so to get the new Mac in order to let things like this get resolved. I hope it all works out for you.
I was happily surprised that I was able to connect and print to my old Brother HL-2040 connected by USB to my iMac 24-inch M1! Nothing to it.
Wow! I am so glad to see your post! I have a friend with that printer who wishes to migrate to MacOS Big Sur. Would you be willing to tell me whether you used Brother's HL -2040 download (Mac OS Yosemite), or whether you used an Apple generic driver (for example Generic PCL).
