i can not turn my iphone 8 plus off in order to plug into computer to turn passcode off

I can not enter my passcode in order to access my phone as the key pad will not let me select the first row of number. I have tried to turn phone off so that i can access my acct on itunes and it will not shut off. Does anyone know what i need to do?

Hold the power and one of the volume buttons together for perhaps two seconds. Then slide the slider to power off.
