Turn off display
My iPhone XS Max has replaced the display. After that proximity sensor not working. Always display on when in a call. Can I turn off the display manually when in a call?

Just a thought but you could try the back tap feature in accessibility.
Open up setting, Accessibility, touch, back-tap, then select double-tap and set as Lock Screen. I use this for quickly locking my screen before slipping my phone into my pocket. Not sure if it would terminate a call but suspect not.
