BMW CarPlay "No Internet Connection" when starting car

I've looked at multiple threads regarding BMW and CarPlay's "No Internet Connection" but haven't found an exact match for the situation I see. When I start my car, CarPlay sometimes partially activates. I primarily use it for Waze navigation and to get Waze to display in the panel, I sometimes have to activate Sport or Eco Drive mode. If I go to Wi-Fi on my iPhone, it displays that CarPlay is engaged but there is a message "No Internet Connection." If I disable Wi-Fi and then re-enable it, CarPlay reconnects and no warning message appears. So my question is, what is preventing the internet connection from establishing at the time I start the car? Why do I have to perform the disable/enable step to activate it?

Hi ChrisSOracle,

We appreciate you reaching out to us about CarPlay. Rest assured that we'll do our best to assist you or get you pointed in the right direction.

We understand that you are experiencing issues engaging CarPlay features because you are getting a "No Internet Connection" message.

The steps in the article below may help.

If you need help with CarPlay

Also, does your vehicle have a Wi-Fi feature? If yes, do you have a service or a plan that provides internet connectivity on your vehicle's Wi-Fi network?

Based on how you describe the issue, it does seem like your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network that has no internet connectivity.

If your iPhone is automatically connecting to your vehicle's Wi-Fi network, we recommend that you disconnect from it, then check if the issue persists.

ChrisSOracle,

We appreciate you trying that step. This confirms that your iPhone is indeed connected to a network that has no internet connectivity.

Next, we recommend that you look for that network and disconnect from it.

When you see the "No Internet Connection" message while CarPlay is engaged, we'd like you to go to Settings > Wi-Fi.

Look for the network that your iPhone is connected to, tap ⓘ, then select Forget This Network.

Also, do you have Personal Hotspot enabled? If yes, does it help if you disable this feature while CarPlay is engaged?

These details are going to help us determine what is causing your iPhone to lose internet connectivity while CarPlay is engaged.

Please keep us posted.

Take care!

The Wi-Fi network the iPhone is connected to is CarPlay:

So forgetting this network is not going to resolve the problem.

As previously mentioned, I do not have a hot spot installed in my vehicle. I think this is the answer to why the "No Internet Connection" message is appearing.

Thanks for your reply.  I do not have a "Hot Spot" in my BMW, if that is what you mean by "Wi-Fi network."  The car connects to the CarPlay Wi-Fi network at startup.  There is a BMW Bluetooth connection that is used when Apple Car Play is not engaged (it is in a "Not Connected" state).  When iDrive is engaged, then the bluetooth would be in a "Connected" state.

Is the lack of a"No internet connection" message after disengaging and re-engaging the Wi-Fi the real issue?  Based on your questions and other information I have found in online discussions, if there is no hot spot installed, there is no internet connection - period.  CarPlay uses phone data even though the phone identifies it as a Wi-Fi connection.

ChrisSOracle,

Thank you for keeping us posted. Have you had the chance to check if the issue persists if you disconnect your Wi-Fi connectivity while CarPlay is engaged?

Also, have you had the chance to try your iPhone on a different CarPlay supported vehicle, or try a different iPhone with your vehicle?

These steps can help us further isolate the issue.

Please keep us posted.

Take care!

I have found that if I disconnect the wifi and reconnect that the message "No Internet Connection" does not appear ... for some time. I do not have another CarPlay supported vehicle or iPhone to test with. Per my previous response, I think this is just a fault with the message not being consistent. I do not have a hotspot, so I do not have internet access to connect to.
