How do I change the owner of a shared iCloud drive account?

I'm the owner of our family shared iCloud account. My wife and son are both members. We setup a shared 200Gb iCloud drive account through my wifes account which both my son and I joined. How do I change ownership of the iCloud drive account to my own account without loosing any data? I'm assuming I would need to leave the shared drive, setup a new shared drive and then invite both my wife and son to it. How do I do this without anyone (including myself) losing any data?

So, I carried on researching and found an answer. It IS possible to change the owner of a shared iCloud account, so to everyone that uses these forums and who receives an answer from a 'specialist', let this be a lesson for you.

To change the owner of a shared iCloud drive, follow these simple steps

  1. Using the account you wish to become the new shared family iCloud drive owner, leave any existing family or other shared iCloud drive
  2. Using the same account, add a new iCloud plan (e.g. 2Tb). At this point you cant invite anyone,
  3. On the current iCloud family shared drive account ID, leave and stop sharing the family shared iCloud drive. Everyone's files/images are safe for the remainder of the current plan (up to 30days)
  4. On the account you've just added the new iCloud plan, you can now share this as the new Family shared iCloud drive and send invites to the other family members.

That's all there is to it. Everyone's files remain where they where but are now associated with the new family shared iCloud account. No need to backup or download the originals if the files on the devices were optimised.

Hi Rose. Thanks for responding. If there's no way to change the owner of a shared icloud storage account, how do I go about transferring the data to a new account? If I was to add a 2Tb storage account to my account and then invite both my wife and son to share it, what happens to the data they currently have stored in my wifes shared storage account? Neither of them have a Mac or PC and their storage is almost full on their phones. In addition, the files stored in the cloud are at their full size and the ones on their devices are compressed.

There has to be a way to transfer data, otherwise what you are saying is that once you start to use iCloud storage you are locked into it. That isnt allowed under GDPR which requires data to be freely and easily transportable across systems. I've tried to use iCloud for Windows to download my photos and had some success, but there doesnt appear to be anyway way to re-upload the photos to my iCloud photo's account and re-sync them to my phone once transferred to the new iCloud storage account.
