Question about Apple TV

I’m absolutely in love with my Apple TV 4K. I’m actually planning on purchasing the newest one when it is available just so I can get the updated software and new remote.

I have a question about content. When I watch movies I purchased via the Apple TV app I always see some type of refresh rate. Like it will switch from 4K quality to a blurry type of video as it seems to buffer, but then it clears up.

First of all, I’m hardwired in my box. I don’t use WiFi as of course that could be unpredictable. However, I don’t think it is an issue with my internet. The reason why is because when I watch anything on Netflix or YouTube or a few other stations, I never get this problem of movies or tv shows switching from 4K to sort of SD quality as it seems to buffer.

I sit here and watch episode after episode of something in 4K on Netflix and I don’t get this issue. But if I go to the Apple TV app and watching something in 4K I always get the buffering type video, clearing up then buffering and then clearing up again throughout the movies I watch. It’s not a specific movie, it’s pretty much every movie.

One of my questions is this. Does Netflix use something different to keep the quality of their content at a constant rate to where I never have this issue? I really don’t know how to ask this except I figured Apple content would work better as it’s part of its own ecosystem, but when third part content works better I have to ask.

Is this only with movies purchased as I believe I’ve watched content on Apple TV+ and don’t think I’ve ever seen this issue. So I'm wondering if this only happens with purchased content. I really don’t know how all this works, just that my purchased content seems to feel like it’s constantly loading and buffering while Netflix content is super smooth and perfect throughout whatever I watch. Also, Apple TV+ content seems super smooth as well.

Sorry to hear that for you the video quality doesn’t start at the expected quality.

If you can, please measure what bandwidth is available at the Apple TV box, as measured by the Speedtest app on the Apple TV box itself. If it is less than 25 Mbps, then that would be part of the problem. Ping and jitter also define the quality of the connection.

On the contrary, Netflix would auto-switch to a different (lower) bitrate stream, when the app detects that the connection can’t keep up. Apple’s content from the iTunes Store and Apple TV app Channels use a single predetermined stream per resolution, at a bitrate that is a bit higher than most other content providers would use, and where buffering (waiting/pre-loading) is the remaining option when the connection can’t keep up.
