How to update an app if you no longer have access to the account used to originally download/purchase it?

I need to update Xcode on my MacBook Pro. The issue is every time I try to update it, the App Store prompts me to log in to the Apple ID I used to originally download it - a work account, that I no longer have access to. I keep trying to log in with my current personal Apple ID, but it's not accepting it. Any advice? Would it be ok to delete this instance of Xcode on my laptop and re-download under my personal Apple ID, or would that cause issues w/ my system?

You should be able to delete the application and download it again using your current Apple ID. You may lose access to some of the data associated with the currently installed application.

You may have to sign out of the App Store, restart the computer, and then sign back in to be able to download the application again.
