12 Pro Max poor call quality

My partner and I have always upgraded every 2 years, and have been devoted iphone consumers since the very first one. We both upgraded December 2020 to 12 pro max, and the call quality when we speak to each other is awful? If we call using WhatsApp or Facebook messenger over 4G the call is crystal clear, which discounts a hardware problem with speakers or mic. However when using standard phone function it varies between listening to a robot or someone under water. Can we both return them to Apple as defective? Never thought we’d switch to android, but we’re so fed up of our new phones.

Thanks for posting your question about your iPhone's poor call quality in Apple Support Communities! There are a few things you can try to see if you are able to improve your call audio quality. First, you can try disabling Wi-Fi calling if it is currently active by going to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling. Secondly, you can try disabling voLTE for your phone calls and use it strictly for data by going to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Only. If these options don't work you may want to try contacting your carrier for additional steps.
