'Other' user log in option

Have a device with the Big Sur O/S. Since the last update, the employee sees an "Other" user option - see below image - when the user logs off. The "Other" user option should be for Guest or Root both of which are disabled according to System Preferences / Users & Groups. No other employees are experiencing this. Any ideas as to what is causing this and what should be my concern level?

It may be something that installed a hidden user account. You could look in Directory Utility, but there are over a hundred default users in macOS. I don't know how you would search for one. Users with a UniqueID between 400 and 499 are hidden and cause that login option to appear.

Try this defaults command to remove the Other… login option:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWOTHERUSERS_MANAGED -bool FALSE

We went into System Preferences/users & Group/Login options/Directory utility and compared the user lists line by line. I had 114 records - been using it longer and the user in question had 112 records.

Then it's likely just a misconfiguration. The defaults command may turn it off.

I had two more users than this employee but don't ever see the Other user.

There isn't a user named "Other."

It is just a way to allow users to log in when they don't appear on the list of users. Root would be an "Other" user.

It allows users Other than those listed to log in, should there be an account for them.
