Old iPhone iCloud tabs show up in Mac Safari

Consistently, very old iPhone iCloud tabs are showing up in my Safari (macOS Catalina). I try to get rid of them but very soon they show up again.

Here is my setup: iPad Pro (running latest iPad OS), iPhone 12 (running latest iOS), MacBook Pro (running Catalina).

The problem only appears on the Mac Safari. That is where the very old iCloud tabs for the iPhone show up. To note, the iCloud tabs for the iPad when displayed on the Mac Safari are correct and current.

The problem does NOT show up on the iPad Safari. All iCloud tabs of both the iPhone and Mac that are showing on the iPad Safari are correct and current.

How do I solve this problem? I have already turned on and off Safari syncing on the Mac. I have tried to delete cookies, websites, and preferences. I have even go so far as to try to locate the Preferences file in the Mac Library from the Finder and delete them.

What else can I try?

Ok, so this is what I tried and it seemed to finally work.

Instead of logging out of iCloud from the Mac, I had my iPhone log out of iCloud.

My rationale was that perhaps by having my iPhone log out of iCloud, it would delete all iCloud cache and local caches of iCloud tabs. Then, I re-logged in to iCloud from the iPhone. Now, Safari on the Mac only shows the actual iCloud tabs opened on the iPhone.

I am having this issue as well on a new iPad Pro. I found several threads on these forums about the issue.

In iCloud tabs on my new iPad Pro, there are a hundred or more “open” tabs from my 12 Pro and previous iPad. My tabs are set to auto-close after a day, and I have cleared history on all devices and toggled iCloud for Safari. (I haven’t signed out because it’s a pain setting up Apple Pay cards.)

Like you, mine seem to start from last November. There are tabs about the election.

Edit: At first when I tried closing the tabs, they immediately reappeared. Upon trying again they (hopefully) stayed closed. We’ll see if they come back.

Edit 2: They came back. :(

Edit 3: I noticed that as soon as I opened Safari on the devices, the tabs reappeared. So I disabled iCloud for Safari on one of those devices and then deleted the tabs on my iPad showing the tabs. I have to figure out what to do with my iPhone because I do want iCloud enabled. Those tabs are still showing.

I had “phantom tabs” showing up on my new iPhone that opened on my iPad about 6 months ago. In my research on how to resolve this, I read that it could have been caused by renaming a device, and I had renamed my iPad in the past. At any rate, after trying many of the suggestions I read online to no avail, here is what ultimately worked for me:

1. Sign out of iCloud on my iPad

2. Using another device, in my case I used my Mac, open Safari’s Start Page and begin closing the “phantom tabs” appearing under my iPad’s name one-by-one by right-clicking and choosing ‘Close’.

3. Clear all website data in Safari settings on the iPad after having signed out of iCloud

4. Sign back into iCloud on the iPad

5. As a test, open a new tab and browse to any website.

Then… I waited. After a few minutes all of the old “phantom tabs” were gone and the website I opened in step 5 as a test was the only 1 appearing across my Mac and iPhone. I hope this works for someone else.
