my contacts aren’t working!!

recently i’ve been getting new people and making contacts for them but it won’t save. i get the persons number then text them and add them as a contact with their name. then i exit out of messages and check their contact but it’s just their number. i go to contacts and their contact is still there with the persons number, but messages won’t save their name. Someone please help this is happening a lot.
