MacBook Air M1 Will Not Sleep

I've done all the things in the Apple troubleshooting articles to get my new (reconditioned) Mac to sleep to no avail. This conversation lists two functions/ apps that are preventing sleep for many, including me:

The conversation was in March 2021 - I have not seen any response from Apple. Apple can you help?

I'll firstly clear one misconception here. In this thread, you are communicating with Apple users (like you and me), and not Apple support staff. It's rare to get a reply from an Apple employee because there a multiple threads created every minute.

If you Mac isn't sleeping, try logging out of your user account and then put it to sleep.

This link should help if all else fails:

Thank you for the clarification on who is usually here - I always get good help from the community!

I tried logging out/ in; I also updated to Big Sur 11.3.1 because I could...

I also followed all the steps in the article linked above (I had done them once but did them again)...

Still, I cannot do manual sleep in any way. For instance when I do Apple/Sleep from the top bar, the screen goes dark for a second then pops up open again.

In my Activity Monitor, both powerd and WindowServer appear at preventing sleep. Not sure if those are things I can turn off or delete?
