Old MacBook Pro corrupted MacOS

I have a MacBook Pro 13" from 2013 on which the MacOS was corrupted. But although the local password to open the MacBook was unchanged, it now rejects that password when we try to recover the files.

Wipe it and start over: Erase and reinstall macOS - Apple Support

You might be able to boot recovery: Use macOS Recovery on an Intel-based Mac - Apple Support

If not, create a bootable installer on another Mac: How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

MacBook Pro 13” early 2013 tops out at macOS 10.15.7, while MacBook Pro 13” late 2013 can run Big Sur.

If you have data on this Mac of value that’s not already been archived, use the bootable installer to create an external copy (or two) of the data before the erase and install, then wipe and re-install the internal storage, and (maybe) then migrate in the data from the backup using Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant.
