as of yesterday (23rd May 2021) I have been unable to access my BT Email account on either my Ipad or my Iphone?
they both stopped at the same time, I followed your instructions and deleted the mail account and tried to set up the mail account as new and I get the message - The IMAP server “mail.btinternet.com” doesn’t support Password authentication. Please check your account settings and try again”
please can you help?

Should it be necessary to escalate your issue to Apple Support, the quickest route to engaging with Apple Support will be via the Contact Support link at top-right of this page.
You need to contact your email provider (BT) and check with them your parameters (SMTP/IMAP etc.)

I have spoken to BT and they have confirmed nothing has changed at their end, I can access my email account on the web and via my PC at home but neither of my ios devices will work? So it has to be something in the IOS not allowing the BT accounts?
I don't wanna play the blame game, but I think that only BT support team (try to talk to a chief technician) can give you an appropriate answer about the error message you got (The IMAP server “mail.btinternet.com” doesn’t support Password authentication.).
