My podcast app has not been functioning well since the last update, and it hasn’t added new content for almost all of my followed shows in about 24-36 hours. Is now the time to switch to a new player? I can go to Spotify and immediately find all of my shows newest releases.

I've have this problem too. New podcast episodes are appearing hours later in the podcast app than in Spotify. In some cases, the newer episode never appears and is skipped entirely. For example, on a daily podcast I might never see the Tuesday episode on Tuesday but I receive the Wednesday episode the next day. In other cases, the newer episode appears hours later than it should and in the case of "news" podcasts this can pretty much render the content useless. [Note: I use Spotify as my "control" to be sure that the new episode is available elsewhere and just missing on the iOS Podcast app]. This has been going on since the iOS update that changed the look/feel of the Podcast iOS app earlier in 2021. This is driving me crazy since I listen to 6-8 hours of podcasts every day (don't judge!) I would switch to Spotify if not for the fact that I haven't figured out how to set up a play next/play list of podcasts when listening to a group of podcasts at once. I prefer that Apple just fix the issue. Best case, Apple is not checking for updates as frequently as they used too. Worse case, they have something "broken" in their update feeds. Either way, they need to FIX IT!
