iPhone has frozen during update

Today my iPhone prompted an update when I connected it to my MacBook, I started the update but during the process the iPhone almost completed the update but then froze.

I couldn't do anything with the phone as the screen was froze and wouldn't turn off or do anything.

I removed the battery and now it will only turn on when connected to the MacBook.

It appears now that the phone has lost all data and requires a reset but it won't even reset now.
