To add a bit to Phil0124's excellent response, if the service you're using has commercials, you generally can't fast forward through them. Many services have two (or more) tiers. You can get the ad-supported version for a lower price or pay more for the version without ads. Examples include Hulu and Peacock. Other services, like Netflix, don't have ads.

There is no native recording or DVR ability in the Apple TV. some Apps may offer DVR in the cloud as an option.

However, since most content on the Apple TV is on demand, recording is not really necessary you can just start a show or movie at any time you want. Commercials also are not really a concern either as most subscriptions to apps will not have commercials since you are already paying for the service.

The Apple TV is not a cable box, it does not work like a cable box does.
