How do I backup a phone to iCloud?

I signed up for family Apple one. Are we able to backup each phone and iPad we own if they are not over the gb limits to the cloud? Does each individual need to have an iCloud address?

Each Apple ID has access to the total amount of storage offered in the plan for which you signed up. That total is shared between all users and does not have boundaries excrept the total amount.

You do not have to have your own Apple ID but Apple strongly recommends it.

"Can I share an Apple ID with someone else?

Your Apple ID should not be shared with anyone else. It provides access to personal information including contacts, photos, device backups, and more. Sharing your Apple ID with someone else means you are giving them access to all your personal content and may lead to confusion over who actually owns the account. To share purchases, photos, a calendar, and more with someone else, try Family Sharing, iCloud Photo Sharing, or other easy-to-use sharing features."
