Default audio output of Apple TV being Airport express speakers.

I would like to be able to connect my Airport express to my Apple TV as it’s default audio output. However I am unable to set it as the default audio output even though it still allows for the AirPlay feature to send the audio to them and the speakers work how they should. I want to be able to have it as the default audio output so I do not have to navigate the settings and then swipe down from the content I am watching to make them the primary speakers.

I'm not sure I have a solution for you, but if you can provide the following additional information it will help others with providing you with one:

The version of tvOS running on your Apple TV.
Please verify that you have the 4th gen Apple TV 4K model. By your tagline, I'm assuming that it is.
Which exact model is your AirPort Express base station and what version of firmware is it running?
Are you using the Apple Home feature in conjunction with this?
