Delays when answering calls with Airpod Pros on iPhone

Hey Folks,

I'm having a 5 to 10 second delay between when I answer a call by clicking on my Airpod Pros and when I can hear the caller. They experience a similar delay in hearing my voice.

I don't see this delay when I answer the call directly without the Airpods. All of my devices are at the latest revision.

This is really annoying and unprofessional to my customers when they call me.

I anyone else experiencing this?

Any ideas on how to fix this?

iPhone XS, iOS 14

I think I've found a workaround for this problem by performing the following tests:

Test 1.

The problem disappeared after I turned off all my other Apple devices. MacBook, iPad and iMac off and only iPhone and AirPods Pro on results in normally functioning AirPods Pro during phone calls.

Test 2.

The problem returned when I turned on one other Apple device (iMac + iPhone + AirPods Pro = Delayed connection between iPhone and AirPods Pro on in/outgoing calls).

Test 3.

The problem of test 2 disappeared again after I adjusted the settings of the AirPods Pro on my iPhone. You can choose to turn off the automatic connection with other Apple devices.

Test 4.

Turning on another Apple device > AirPods Pro continued to work properly.

So it seems that the automatic switching between Apple devices is the culprit and that you can solve that by first turning off all your other Apple devices and then turning off the automatic switching of your AirPods Pro via your iPhone:

- Connect your AirPods to your iPhone or iPad as you normally would.

- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.

- Choose Bluetooth.

- Tap the "i" (information) button next to the name of your AirPods.

- Scroll down to "Connect to this iPhone'" and tap it.

- Change the option from "Automatically" to "When Last Connected to This iPhone."

- Repeat these instructions on your other devices.

Hope this helps!

I had a less-than-helpful conversation with someone at Apple support a few days ago. He said that it could be related to the fact that I have my AirPods paired to my iPhone and my iPad. The delay could be related to the time needed to switch the connection between the two devices. His suggestion was to turn off Bluetooth on the iPad. I did this and haven't noticed any significant improvement.

You'd think that if you had AirPods paired to a phone and a tablet, the phone would take precedence when it was receiving calls.

I am experiencing the same problems and have noticed that after a reset, the AirPods Pro only work properly for 2 times and then show the same problem again. This indicates that the problem must be solvable and therefore I would like to do my best to describe the problem in as much detail as possible so that Apple support can do something with it.

Problem description:

When making outgoing calls, I give the command "Hey Siri, call Peter". Siri confirms via the earpods that the iPhone is going to call Peter. So at that moment there is a direct working connection between AirPods and iPhone. The iPhone starts calling and I hear the usual outgoing call tone. I also see the orange dot turn on in the top right corner of my screen, indicating that the microphone on my AirPods is also activated. At the moment that Peter picks up the call, I see;

- The orange dot goes out;

- my iPhone displays the icon indicating that sound is coming through my AirPods even though I can't hear anything on my AirPods.

It then takes 4, 8, 12 or sometimes 18 seconds before the orange dot on my iPhone comes on and the sound on my AirPods is activated. Peter did not hear anything at all during that time, which indicates that the phone connection was established correctly, but that the connection between iPhone and AirPods did not work.

I also have the same problem with incoming phone calls.

Was this problem present from the beginning? No, but unfortunately I cannot remember when it started. However, I suspect that this problem is related to the fact that I also have an iMac, MacBook and iPad in my house. The AirPods Pro bluetooth profile is apparently synchronized on all my devices via iCloud. It seems that when the sound of the phone call starts, the AirPods first check to see if they should accept the sound from the iPhone. As if the sound of the phone call comes from a "new" source. I guess that the length of the time out seems to be related to the number of other Apple devices that are near my AirPods Pro.

I have this same problem. I've reset my AirPods, forgot them on my iPhone, hard reset the phone, and reconnect the AirPods. Still have the same problem. Just purchased the Pros, I did not have this problem on the standard AirPods I had previously. I do not have the delay with calls on the iPhone either. iPhone is on the latest OS, AirPods Pro is on the latest firmware.
