but the mail icon doesn't show anything at all.
If I select "inbox" or "all mailboxes" it shows a number, but not if I want to know only about today's emails.
I suppose I could mark all messages "as read", but is there an alternative?

Mail>Preferences>General make changes here and then come back to your preferred settings.

if no resolve, delete the account and add it back in again—IMAP mail stays on the server, so non-destrictive.

I had already done that, but no joy.
Just to be extra sure I deleted and re-entered one of the accounts, but it has made no difference.
"all mailboxes" and "inbox only" seem to work fine. Today, isn't.
