External drives to be used with iPadOS need to be formatted with a single partition using either Apple APFS or HFS+ formats OR FAT, FAT 32 or ExFAT ( 64-bit ) formatting code protocols.

If that drive is an “old skool” spinning platter hard drive, and NOT a flash memory SSD, even after proper formatting, that drive may still give you issues.

Spinning platter hard drives need more power to work that no iPad power supply can sufficiently supply.

You may need to plug that hard drive into its own dedicated power source to be able to use that drive with your iPad Pro IF it is a spinning platter hard drive.

You might want to consider an additonal purchase of a plug-in powered USB-C hub for your iPad Pro, as well, to get additional ports and slots to your 2018 iPad Pro that need extra external power to work.

Best of Luck to You!
