I am trying to help my dad update his old iPad. After a while on iTunes it says " An unknown error occurred (1101)

I have an unknown error (4013) on my ipad I have an unknown error, its telling me to connect to iTunes but I've done all that and I've tried updating the iPad and also restoring it but nothing is seeming to work.

the article at the link gives a huge list of error codes but 1101 isn't one of 'em.
