App Store password unable to turn off

I’m using the latest iPad Pro 11 and I can’t turn off the password for downloads on App Store for free appsor even the books app. I’ve tried the method listed on the official page but it doesn’t work (see below)

Require a password on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Media & Purchases.
  4. Tap Password Settings, then choose the setting that you want.

If you don't see Password Settings, you have turned on Face ID or Touch ID for App Store and iTunes Purchases. To change this, go back to Settings, tap "Face ID & Passcode" or "Touch ID & Passcode", then turn off Face ID or Touch ID next to iTunes & App Store.

I’m missing the toggle button for “require password” even though I’ve removed all passcode and Face ID . I’ve even toggled don’t require password under screen time > content settings > app purchases. please see screenshot for the current settings. i tried restarting my iPad several times so sometimes there’s no password prompt for the first download but subsequently all downloads requires password !

Hi there lyeee,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

You stated you're currently wanting to turn off the password requirement for free apps.

Require a password for App Store and iTunes purchases is a great article for this issue, but there may be more happening with your iPhone and the settings currently since you do not have a slider option next to "Require Password" or a check at the top under which option you want under "When Purchasing".

The steps you tried did work as expected since you are now able to get to the Password Settings.

We'd like to try a few more steps with you.

Try turning off Content & Privacy Restrictions completely in Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.

From there, go back to Settings > [Your Name] at the top > Media & Purchases > Password Settings. Check to see if you have a slider next to "Free Downloads".

If you don't see the option, try selecting either "Always Require Password" or "Require After 15 Minutes" at the top under "When Purchasing".

Once that is completed, let us know your results.

Take care!

There is a bug in the Media & Purchases Settings of all released versions of iPadOS since iPadOS 14.2.

The issue that you outline is fully described here:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252090219?cid=em_apple_email_question_correctanswer_go_to_the_discussion_en-us&answerId=253977074022#253977074022

I strongly recommend that you submit a bug report via the iPad Product Feedback page. Please ensure that you include the model of iPad and the installed version of iPadOS in the body of your bug report:

Feedback - iPad - Apple

Apple Support have, in recent days, described a potential (if inelegant) workaround for this issue:

“Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Larger Text, then turn on "Larger Accessibility Sizes" and drag the bar all the way to the right. After this, you should be able to view and set these options. Once done, you can go back and set their text size to whatever you need. If that is the case, then simply tapping the option you wish should activate the behavior, even if you cannot see the checkmark at the end of the row.”
