Trying to save iCloud storage on the details in Photos

Could somebody know the answer on my question? It goes about iCloud storage with the Photos app. I want to have a really good efficiently storage on my free 5Gb storage plan, Photos also uses the most of it.

Does it help to crop photo's, cutting video's, selecting out of burst to save iCloud storage?

The reason why i ask this, is because i always could reverse the effects (also on editing media from other devices like my Mac). Just like it still is stored in my iCloud.

iPhone 8 Plus, iOS 14

Hello Itzsimon06,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you’re using the 5GB iCloud storage plan and would like to know if editing photos or videos would increase some storage space. We’d be happy to help.

Cropping a photo or cutting a video would not necessarily save space in iCloud. Although the image appears smaller or the video is shorter after editing, that original version will still take up space on your device and in iCloud while giving you the option to revert back to the original version.

However, if you cut a video and save it as a new clip and then delete the original video, that new clip will take up less space but will no longer give you the option to revert back to the original.

We recommend checking out how to Manage your photo and video storage. Also, the section titled “What happens when I go over my iCloud storage limit?” in Get help with iCloud Photos has helpful information on this topic.

Have a great day!
