144hz usb-c to usb-c

So I currently have a 2019 15inch macbook pro and a monitor with a usb-c source input which supports op to 180hz. If I connect the mbp through usb-c (usb c - usb c) it can only go up to 2k 85hz. If I connect it through display port (usb c - dp) it can go up to 2k 180hz.

So my question is: can the macbook output 120hz+ at 2k through a different/better usb c to usb c cable or is it just limited to 85hz through usb c.

And if it is limited to 85hz, can the M1 macbooks do 120hz+ at 2k throught usb c to usb c?
