the screen turned grey with strange lines. recently installed some updates from Apple. Could that be the reason or has the screen gone bad? I can see the tip of the curser on the top.

Try the Start up your Mac in safe mode
This will try to do a Repair Disk, clear cache files and only load Apple Software. The process all happen behind the sheens and no user interaction is required. If successful - it will load slowly - Normal. Once logged in run thus way for 10 -15 minutes.
To exit Safe Mode - just restart in normal mode.

Tried all of that suggested by apple but nothing is visible on the screen. Even after reboot the screen remains the same.
No but i can see the cursor on top little bit and still lines are as it is
