ICloud folder won't open

I have lost about a year of data. My documents folder in the cloud includes this data, but the ICloud folder won't open in Finder. (says it's 'loading') How do I get at these files?

iMac 21.5″ 4K, macOS 10.15

Was iCloud Drive and desktops and documents box always checked Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support
