FCPX 10.5.2 crashes while importing XMF files from Sony FX6

Final Cut Pro X quits whenever I attempt to import footage from a recent film shoot. This is the first time I've used the Sony FX6 shooting XMF.

I've attempted to import each file separately and have isolated the files which crash the import (i've highlighted these in blue in the screenshots)

HOWEVER, I am 100% sure these files are not corrupt as they open in Quicktime and Da Vinci Resolve.

Half of the offending files will open in Compressor, the other half will not.

Crash Log attached:

Screenshots attached below

Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I'm on

  • FCPX 10.5.2
  • Mac OS 11.4
  • 2019 16-Inch MacBook Pro

Thank you!

The Handbrake workaround is a good one - they convert and import now no problem

It's enough to get started on the edit but it's not going to be ideal for the export end of the project

I've run Etrecheck and here is the full report:

I have a feeling this highlighted section is going to be most relevant - something about "Corrupt value: 0x600007fa0000abea" does suggest corrupt file - can't explain why it still works in QT, DaVinci and Handbrake but not FCPX or Compressor!

Thanks for your quick reply!

  • Yes I've already tried deleting preferences, first thing, and the crash is the same
  • Yes FCPX has full disk access
  • The library is stored on my desktop
  • I've tried both copy to library and leave files in place and the crash is the same

It's funny I thought 'leave files in place' would fix it and I could generate proxies and work from them but I can't get that far

For just one of the offending .xmf files I dragged it directly into Original Media and it then imported, and worked for a while, but then FCPX crashed and wouldn't open again until I deleted it from Original Media. That didn't work with any of the other offending files.

Whenever there is a crash, don't forget to delete preferences - they tend to become corrupted, and that may cause further crashes.

To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting FCP X and click Delete Preferences. The application will start in a default state, and open an "Untitled" library. Reopen the library you were working on, set the preferences the way you like them, and try again.

Are you copying to the library or leaving in place? Where is the library stored?

Does FCP have Full Disk Access in System Preferences->Security & Privacy->Privacy?

There could be something in these files, or there could be a software issue.

To test the first hypothesis you could use HandBrake or Compressor and convert the file to H264 or HEVC and see how that goes.

To look for possible software conflicts Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here.

Use the “additional text” button and paste the report into the text box.

There is likely to be some subtle issue with the file that is not noticeable in other applications but that FCP stumbles on.

But there also some serious issues that the Etrecheck report brings to light and that could cause you other problems down the road. I think you should address them sooner rather than later.

1) Your drive is essentially FULL. 50GB out of 2TB. This causes performance issues and as available space fluctuates a lot there is a chance that at some point you run out of space altogether, crashing your mac. Always leave some 10-15% or more free.

2) System security updates are disabled, and Gatekeeper is set to "everywhere".

2a)You do NOT need to set Gatekeeper this way, even if you want to run some unsigned applications.

All you need is to control-click and choose "Open" the very first time you launch an application.

2b) Go to System Preferences->Software Update, click Advanced and CHECK "install system data files and security updates"

You obviously have migrated from a previous mac, as your system has lots of old stuff, many of those very old and deprecated years ago. This can cause many issues, especially since some of these things modify the system at a rather low level.

3) Launchd: ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.bittorrent.uTorrent.plist
    Executable: /Applications/uTorrent.app

Why do you have this running all the time?

4) Many of these plugins and preference panes are OLD. Flip4mac, Silverlight....

and PERIAN - this has been obsoleted more than 5 years ago.

  Plugin: /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ContentUploaderPlugin.plugin
