Can you record outdoor swim if watch is over wetsuit or gloves

I have a series 5 watch. It’s not clear whether Apple Watch workout is meant to record an outdoor swim if you wear it over your wetsuit or wetsuit glove. If you cold water swim you need to wear it over neoprene so it cannot be in contact with the skin of your wrist. My watch continually auto pauses when open water swimming even with button auto pause disabled. I am wondering if it is due to lack of skin contact.

For best results, the back of your Apple Watch needs skin contact for features like Wrist Detect, the Taptic Engine, and the electrical and optical heart sensors. Wearing your Apple Watch with the right fit – not too tight, not too loose, and with room for your skin to breathe – keeps you comfortable and lets the sensors do their job.

You may want to tighten your Apple Watch band for workouts, then loosen it when you’ve finished. In addition, the sensors will only work if you wear your Apple Watch on the top of your wrist.
