have an old ipad running ios 5.1.1 -- won't accept my ID because it wants a two step verification but I need to find out what my recovery key is -- the 6 digit verification code that is being texted to me is not working

it sounds like you are trying to use two step authentication to log into your apple id on an iPad running ios5.1.1. Is this correct?
in oder to do this you must enter your Apple ID password followed by the 6 digit code
