I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) running Big Sur 11.4. I would like to play DVDs on it using a Samsung player. Will I need an HDMI to thunderbolt adapter, since the HDMI port is for output only? If so, do you have any recommendations on the best adapter? If not, what would you suggest?

Thunderbolt based capture cards are very expensive, and Thunderbolt capture cards are very rare on top of that.

Hi, I got a HDMI to thunderbolt adaptor. Everything is plugged in correctly. However, the computer is not recognizing the DVD player. Not only does it not come up in the Finder, but it also should automatically start playing in DVD Player, but nothing happens. Your thoughts?
There is no video input on a Mac over HDMI. It was never going to work. holyschmoe was incorrect.
You would need a capture card for that, that can read the video input and translate it for the Mac to display and usually has special software to show the video stream.
I got the capture card you suggested. The instructions are vague, but they say I will need OBS installed before it will work. Is that true? I downloaded OBS, but it looks like it's just for streaming, which is not what I want to do.

I knew that the built-in HDMI port was for output only, but I thought using thunderbolt would circumvent that. No?
Also, the link takes me to a GUERMOK USB 3.0 HDMI to USB C device, but the MacBook Pro doesn't have USB C. Would I need to get a USB C to thunderbolt adapter?

Addendum: I did get the DVD player to play on my MacBook through OBS (kind of a strange setup), but there's no audio. Any suggestions?
Hello, I did get the Video Capture Card you suggested above. I was able to get it to play on my Mac using OBS. But there is no audio. Do you know how to get audio to come through, too?
