Iphone 12 won't initiate charging until screen is tapped ON

I've recently updated my iphone 12 to 14.6, and ever since then, whenever I plug the phone into charger, it won't start charging until the screen is on. I've waited for almost a min to see if the phone detected the charger, but it didn't. When I tap the screen on, immediately charging animation appears with the chime and normal charging takes place. Charging time is in the range of 1.30 to 1.45 hrs. Using original 20watt fast charger and cables

We understand your iPhone will not charge unless your screen is on. We'd like to help you get to the bottom of this.

It looks like you've already taken a look at If your iPhone or iPod touch won't charge. Did you try any of the troubleshoot steps there such as restarting your iPhone or trying a different cable? If not we recommend doing that. Also, try waiting for longer than 60 seconds to see if it charges on its own. In addition to that, see if your iPhone will charge when it's powered off.

Hello Corrie,

Thank you for your suggestions. So far i have done the following actions

1) Hard Reset - Did not resolve the issue

2) Factory Reset - Did not resolve the issue

3) Changed the adapter but used the same cable - Did not resolve

4) Waited for 5 min to see if the charger is detected at some point - Charging did not happen as long as the screen was off

5) Checked if phone was charging when powered off - Yes, the phone switched back on, and charging happened.

I have to now try a new cable, which is expected to arrive in a day or two. i will revert if that sorts the issue.

But it looks strange to see this, no matter whatever happens the phone wont charge until i tap the screen on. Could this be a hardware issue?

Hello Corrie,

The new cable didn't make a difference either. I was going through some old articles & videos of a similar issue found in iPhone XS Max devices, i could relate i am having the same Chargegate issue. The iPhone XS Max Devices affected by the Chargegate problem did not start charging when plugged in while the screen is off. Tapping the screen to wake the device, or sometimes picking it up will initiate charging.

I see i am facing the same issue. A bit surprised why it is coming all of a sudden post the 14.6 Update
