New Apple TV remote not working on HBO Max

Anyone read today’s news? HBO Max has reinstated its previous app version and has apologized to users for the problems the most recent one caused. HBO Max had replaced Apple’s API for playing video with their own home-grown player. It was a disaster with many tech sites lambasting HBO Max for it.

I just tested on the Apple TV 4K (2021), and the remote works fine for me with the updated version of HBO max. Try closing the app by double clicking the TV button and swiping up on the open applications, then reopen HBO Max. If that doesn’t work, I would restart the Apple TV from the settings menu. Next, I would unplug the Apple TV from the outlet for about 10 seconds and plug it back in. As a last resort you could try a factory reset.

I saw a similar article on another site, but it does not change the fact that it works fine for me. The article doesn’t mention whether it’s specific to certain models of the Apple TV or if it is any hardware version paired with the new remote. I just went in and tested again a few minutes ago and the directional buttons work, the play pause button, the touch scrolling feature works, the select button works, the back button works, and when clicking the search icon it allows me to use Siri voice dictation. Again, I have the new 2021 version of the Apple TV 4K. The only issue I have experienced so far had to do with purchased content through iTunes that was randomly stopping every 15 minutes or so, until I unplugged the Apple TV and plugged it back in. Others have done a full factory reset to resolve the same issue I was experiencing.

There was a new HBO max update on Apple TV when I checked this morning. Hopefully that does the trick and fixes your remote issue.

Same issue with only HBO max and my Apple TV remote. I can no longer fast forward/rewind as per normal operation. Super frustrating.
