iPhone keyboard not working properly

My iPhone SE 1st gen has an odd issue with the keyboard in Messages, What’s App etc. Some of the keys at the edge of the screen are not working properly i.e. if I press q I get w, if I press p I get o, if I press backspace I get m and if I press 123 for the numerical keyboard I get emojis instead. In other words in all these cases it selects the next door key inwards. I have tried a force restart, reset all settings and software update, none of which have made any difference. Can anyone help with this strange problem? Thanks!

Peaklandman,

After troubleshooting, it seems like the next best step would be to contact Apple Support so that they can help take a closer look at what may be causing this: Get Support.

It seems less likely that it would be something with the hardware if those areas of the screen function normally when not using the keyboard.

Cheers.

Hello Peaklandman,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities! It sounds like the keyboard on your iPhone SE is not working as expected. We’d like to help.

Thanks for providing your previous troubleshooting steps. We have a couple questions we’d like to ask to help isolate the issue.

Do you have a protective covering on the screen? If so, is it possible to remove it to test if the issue persists?

Is the screen cracked or shattered?

Do the same areas of the screen respond unexpectedly when not using the keyboard? Or does this only occur when using an app that uses the keyboard?

Let's follow the steps linked below, to get things up and running again.

If the screen isn’t working on your iPhone or iPad

Take care.
