Apple tv sharing with family members

I suspect that apple tv+ subscriptions can only be shared with family members that are attached to the same app store. If they are on different app stores from the sharer, the apple tv+ subscription does not appear as shared in the account of the family member. Is this true?

Hi David,

Thank you for your follow up. It sounds like what you are saying is that there is a member of your family that does not see the option to share Apple TV+. Is that correct? If this is the case, we would like to confirm that you see this family member or Apple ID in your Family Sharing account. Do you see them listed as being part of the family in Family Sharing?

What happens when the user trying to access Apple TV+ goes here? - In the Library screen of the Apple TV app TV app, navigate to Family Sharing, then select a family member.

If the family member trying to access the Apple TV+ subscription is in a different country or using a different App Store, they must use the iTunes & App Store in the same country or region as the family organizer. If the family organizer changes their country or region, the family members can change their country or region to match the organizer.

Cheers!

Hi David,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

We are happy to provide you with information about Apple TV and Family Sharing. Family Sharing lets you share viewing privileges with up to six family members. One adult in your household—the family organizer—invites family members to join the family group and agrees to pay for any purchases made by family members. Each should have have a different Apple ID but be part of the family organizer's store or Apple ID.

Learn how to Set up Family Sharing in the Apple TV app here.

Cheers!

Ok, I think we are getting closer.

Yes, A sees family member B and B sees family member A.

A and B both share the same icloud subscription. This all works.

A is the organiser.

B has the apple tv+ subscription. Inside B it is stated apple tv+ is being shared. Inside B, A is listed as having access to the subscription.

However inside A, there is no mention of B sharing apple tv+.

Yes, i know what Family sharing is. Let me try to explain again. Consider family A and B. A is the organiser. When viewed from A (settings, family sharing - lets call this AF) it says you are sharing icloud storage. When viewed from BF it correctly says icloud storage shared by A.

Now, B has a subscription to Apple tv+. BF says Apple tv+ being shared. And in the family member A in BF, it says A has access to apple tv+

However, in AF there is no mention that apple tv+ is shared by B and has no access to it.

A and B reside in different countries and are connected to different app stores, but that should not prevent sharing the subscription. Indeed as mentioned in BF it says A has access to Apple tv+.

so clearly, everyone is on 14.6 and all the logouts, reboots, logging in etc etc have all been tried.

suggestions welcome.

Great for the clear answer. However, i find this extremely strange on a number of levels:

  1. there should be no problem sharing a subscription even if the content varies.
  2. this limitation does not appear to be documented anywhere.
  3. when setting up family sharing there is no warning, error, or message about this. Indeed for the person sharing it is indicated that the subscription is being shared with all members.

At best then this is very poor software, at worst an unexpected and unnecessary limitation.

Ok, so one of my family members was invited to delete their icloud subscription when added to the family. This was done and their icloud allocation was visible in the shared icloud account. 24hrs later it now says “not using” in icloud. What will happen to their data? Their account says that they have still access to the complete shared icloud, but presumably not because they are in a different country to the organiser.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to either support family members, or not. But it must be clear. This feels like a technical implementation which works, with half implemented policy decisions layered on top.
