I just bought a new printer today as referred above and when setting it up , I found that Mac OS Big sur doesn't support this printer. No driver to be found on the web. On the other hand It works ok from my iPhone.
How can I fix this as I fear I have been wasting my money
your comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated

If it is not possible to return the printer, you would have to look for some kind of workaround.
You could try to save to PDF or JPEG on the Mac, then (somehow) transfer to an iPhone or iPad, and finally print from there (via the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app). Not ideal.
Since there are Windows drivers for the GM2040, another option could perhaps be to try a virtual machine (running an appropriate version of Windows) on the Mac under Big Sur.
The experimentally inclined may even want to test a number of printer drivers for other Canon printers (the G2000 series CUPS Printer Driver would be just one example of many). However, this will take time, and there is absolutely no guarantee for success. Also, there is a certain risk involved with any printer driver experiment. Software/hardware problems cannot be ruled out. One may have to erase and reinstall everything on the computer. Data may be lost. So, do not proceed unless you know what you are doing. Make sure that at least three backup copies (on separate media) of important files (photos, etc.) are available before doing anything. Also, ensure that printer driver downloads are from official Canon sites (not from third-party web sites using similar names), or from Apple.

You could try the open-source Gutenprint print driver. Check this page to see if your printer is supported: Gutenprint Supported Printers.
If the seller won't let you return the printer for a refund try contacting the credit card company and challenge the purchase, i.e. a non working printer.

I have already purchased another printer Canon Maxify MB2140 and driver already installed. Printer is supported by Mac OS (bonjour) and is up and running

Canon has not updated the drivers to support Big Sur. Return it and get one that is listed in this Apple document: About AirPrint - Apple Support
you are supposed to check that any hardware you are intent on buying is compaptible
with the computer make and its operating system it is running.
In other words: s***w Mac users.
OK.. I understand but this doesn't solve my problem in case the reseller is not willing to take the printer back

Fortunately for me the Canon reseller took back the machine and I traded a new PIXMA Maxify MB2140 in lieu and place.. so all is good now
