new appleTV remote scrolling problem with HBOMax

I have a 2nd generation AppleTV and recently bought the new Siri Remote. I really like the remote but it does very frustrating things when watching HBOMax. I am not sure if it is a problem with just that app or the remote, but when in HBOMax, the scrolling behaves VERY strangely. Often it keeps scrolling even after I stop swiping. Sometime it starts oscillating back and forth scrolling on its own after I have stopped. I have to exit HBOMax to fix it. The click button 15sec jump doesn't work. With other major players (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Peacock etc) it seems to work, but it works DIFFERENTLY on each app. On some apps scrolling clockwise around the edges on the touch surface will move it forward (counter clockwise for backwards) as if turning a jog wheel. The onscreen graphic even shows a "jog wheel" that duplicates your finger movement around the edge. On other apps the top half of the circle moves forward, and the bottom half makes it move backwards with the same clockwise scroll movement. HBOMax just goes haywire going and not stopping (the worst part). Am I the only one with this problem? is it a problem only with the older AppleTVs?

The direction will change and zoom the other direction. Totally useless. My tvOS is 14.6 (18L569) and says it is up to date. Please help, the HBOMAX app is near-worthless now.

I accidentally hit the Solved button it seems because this issue is definitely not solved. I have tested a buch of different apps and it seems that either there isn't a unified set of code to be used for this function, or the app makers are just not using it if there is one.


The response is all over the map but the HBOMax one is by far the worst. Like I said, some apps work just as you would expect, some not. They seem to fall into these camps:

1) The ring acting as a jog wheel. Touch in a clockwise motion and you scroll forwards, counter clockwise and you scroll backwards. Nice icon on the timeline that matches. Clicking the ring works fine.


2) A clockwise motion scrolls forward on the top half of the circle and backwards on the bottom half, and visa versa with a counter clockwise motion. No unique icon on the timeline. Clicking the ring seems to work fine.


3) The scrolling is totally erratic and keeps going and bounces all over the place. This is the HBOMax version. Clicking the ring does nothing - no jumping 15 sec at all.


This I hope is just a teething session and these kinks will be worked out. Maybe some new code will be offered during WWDC. One could always hope. As of now, I am using my iPhone remote app when watching HBOMax. It seems to work.

HBO Max App for Apple TV is broken since their latest update, where they introduced their own custom player.


Many reports on the New Siri remote and issues with HBO Max.

Temporary workaround, you can fast-forward and rewind using Siri.

You can say things like "Fast-Forward 10 seconds" or "Rewind 10 minutes and 20 seconds".

I have the same issue. appleTV 4K, most recent tvOS update. track pad remote.

Specifically unpredictable behavior w/HBO Max app when trying to advance or go back 15 sec. The scrubber has a mind of its own. And, it does not respond to the remote while it is advancing or going back in unpredictable manner.

It didn't used to operate this way.
