Macbook won’t sleep

I frequently open my MacBook to a dead battery after a day in my backpack. Like 0% when I put it away at 100%. I’ve searched high and low for a solution but none of them have helped and they are all several years old. I’ve gone through activity monitor so verify that nothing is keeping the computer awake. I can’t be the only person having this problem with a 2020 laptop and all the latest updates. Im wondering if my Apple Watch is unlocking it while the lid is closed. I did find one other person citing this same issue but it’s from several years ago.

There are ways to shut down and/or force shut down a Mac computer.

If your Mac has Touch ID &/or other control devices, instructions vary.

This seems to be an updated and workable set of instructions.

Another set, slightly differs, is here:

Q: "Force Quit & Lock Screen - Apple Community" (answered)

"Unlike with older Mac notebooks, holding down Touch ID on your MacBook Pro

or MacBook Air doesn't display a dialog with options to Sleep, Restart, or Shut Down..

..You can find these options in the Apple menu. IF your Mac is unresponsive, you can

hold down Touch ID for six seconds to force a shut down.."

[Holding down ⌥ Option+Control+⌘ Command while holding down the "Power" button

will cause your Mac to attempt to quit any open programs before force-shutting down.]

The SMC reset (link) manages power, among other settings & has

different instructions; depending on security chips with that Mac.

But I don’t want to shut it down, I want to close the lid and be done with it like every other MacBook I’ve owned. I got my first MacBook in 2013 and I was shocked to learn it would not run with the lid closed. It took me a while to get used to but after 9 years I think I’ve got it down. Now it doesn’t work like that anymore? Why can’t I force it to a low power state when I close the lid? Even if I ignore the problem of a dead battery when I open it, it’s still cooking itself in my backpack for no reason.

Sometimes errant behaviors can be self-correcting after use of Safe mode

instructions; in most Macs, from newest M1 ~ back to Tiger's era, or before.

None of my three Mac portables has ever automatically shut-off with lid closed.

There is a thing to try, called "power nap" in some macOS and hardware builds.

Be sure to exit Safe mode; through use of 'restart' when you've finished

troubleshooting. Could be more things to try & do, if it doesn't work out.

PS: While suggested, I've never used 'power-nap' in any Mac.
