Force iPad Mini 4 to use Garmin GLO 2 data

On my iPad Mini 4 Cellular, I want to force it to accept the location data feed from the exterior device (Garmin GLO 2) rather than the inbuilt GPS. When I deactivate WLAN and mobile data, I still appear to be getting data from the device. There appears to be no way to override the Apple feed despite having Garmin Pilot running in the background.

Is the simple fix or a way of making sure you are seeing the incoming Garmin data?

Thanks

When using the Garmin Glo (or any Bluetooth GPS Receiver compatible with iPad) with a WiFi + Cellular model of iPad, pairing the GPS receiver should automatically cause the iPad to use the external receiver for location services.

It follows that the GPS receiver must be able to compute a position solution (i.e., it can “see” sufficient satellites with good geometry) if it is to provide position data to the iPad.

The use of an external GPS receiver is not, of itself, uncommon - as very often, particularly in marine or aviation applications, the iPad may not itself be placed in an ideal location to receive reliable signal from the satellite constellation.

So if I understand it, you wish the iPad to acquire its GPS positioning data from an external device and presumably through a third-party app running on the iPad, and not more directly from the iPad internal GPS hardware?

I’d tend to doubt Apple would allow that (due to the likelihood for misuse), but you’ll want to submit feedback to Apple.

If you require that capability now, I expect you’ll need to source a Garman tablet device. And a Garman app on the iPad can certainly accept its input from an external source, for use within that app, so check with Garman here and/or submit feedback to Garman, too.

Thanks. I am getting a signal in Garmin Pilot app however the Safari browser still seems to be using the internal GPS. On a WiFi iPad, there is no problem as the device does not have an internal GPS and has to use the external device. It appears that the cellular iPad will not cede control and I cannot find any information.

Thanks for your help. I think I just solved it.

On the cellular device, I turned off WLAN and put it into flight mode. Then I turned on Bluetooth and connected the Garmin GLO 2. When I opened SXblue Toolbox, GOS Status toolkit and topo maps on the iPad, I could see the satellites and had a valid lat/long position.

The Garmin device has a lower error than the iPad.

You are very welcome. Conspiracy theorists aside, what you are doing is nothing unusual.

Using an external GPS receiver, coupled via Bluetooth, allows placement of the receiver where it has a clear view of the sky - much better suited for high(er) precision determination of the position solution.

I’m delighted that you’ve worked through the problem - and have a satisfactory outcome.
