It would help to know at least the system version installed on the Mac, also how old the MacBook is. And to see at least a screenshot of the problem. There are several possible reasons, depending on the system version and Mac model. After the Catalina upgrade some older Mac models have been buggy and did no longer show the Library > Photos item in the sidebar, so all views sorted by date were gone. Depending on the system version, the sidebar or the library section could be hidden, full screen mode could change the layout, or the mac could have been starting up in safe mode, where Photos cannot not work properly.

Thank you, stephcheese and Léonie

Apologies if I miss anyone out, this is all so new.

My machine is about 18 months old, has BigSur 11.4 OS

I will attempt to find out how to do a screenshot and get back to you.

Because it is all new I have been very cautious about what I use it for but until Wednesday I was able to access my photos. I simply clicked on the icon and up it came.

I did share a very old Lenovo with Windows 7 - this Mac is quite a different beastie.

Thank you all of you who have tried to help me restore my photo library.

After I sent my last message I decided to do more investigating and a help reply came up which showed me how to use a library repair system. I followed the instructions and to my surprise all was restored.

My real problem is that I have very little IT experience, I also have a degree of Aspergers, am very literal and often initially misinterpret instructions. When following a series of guidelines I often find that part way through I find that the word I was told to click is not on the page, or there is a word that has no meaning for me.

Unfortunately my situation is that I have no access to instruction except through the internet so I have a chicken and egg situation.

Should you know of any hard copy instructions dealing with these Apple machines I would be grateful to know about it.

So, thank you again; it is such a relief to have it sorted; I really appreciate your efforts to help

oops

I think I just replied to myself. Not used to using forum and it's probably not a good idea to work so late(early)!

I decided to do more investigating and found a restore programme --- which worked.

Previous wandering lifestyle and Aspergers have so far made it impossible to find any one to one lessons on using MacBook Pro. If anyone has any information that would help I would be pleased to receive it.

Thank you all so much for your help. I really appreciate it, it is such a relief to have my photos back.
