The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.

With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install. Make sure to use Only Safari to commence the download as Other may not work

Make a Time Machine Backup Before attempting. Notation - Mojave is the Last version to support 32 bit applications / extensions and Drivers. Catalina and Big Sur Only support 64 bit and there is not workaround.

Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Defrag, VPNs etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal operation of the OS and may even Corrupt the OS requiring a Reinstallation.

While appreciative of your kind reply and also temerously aware of the feeling of an arthritic (me!) being on a rather fast bullet train which stops only 11 seconds at a stop, each of which are 200 miles apart <LOL>, it is a shame that major companies like Apple (computers and MAC-OS) and Microsoft (Office) have started deep-sixing their products at a faster cycle. Back-compatibility is out of the window! Support for computers and programs (APPS?) is only a few years now a days, whereas earlier it used to be many more years. Operating systems are like the villager that went to a modern city, received ivy league education, learnt a few things and would now refuse to recognize its rural relatives and friends. As a concrete example: latest word-processor not even recognizing a document created by its great grand father (10 year old version of the same program)!

Now it is understandable that 32 bit vs 64 bit are probably different beasts and putting the capability to handle those two under the same hood and administration (operating system) would tax the programmers (not satisfied any longer burning the mid-night lamp while churning their coding factory fuelled only by pizza and coke) -- but something sure seems amiss.

CHANGE is indeed the biggest CONSTANT!
